What is the international standing of the United States? What is the status of the American state domestically? What can be done to increase American influence abroad, and improve democracy and equality of opportunity at home? What threats exist or could develop to undermine American society?
This blog is a way to think about answers to those questions. The goal is not to answer any question definitively–since that would be impossible–but rather to force the articulation and development of ideas that could prove useful over time, in arguments, discussions, or even in government. The initial focus of Modern Publius will be on American involvement in Iraq and the weaknesses that conflict has exposed in the modern American democratic system.
